What Minn. Stat. §504B.178 requires

  • Return deadline: 5–21 days
    • 21 days Standard (3 weeks after termination + forwarding address)
    • 5 days Tenant leaves due to building condemnation
  • Deposit cap: No statewide cap
  • Simple interest on the deposit must be paid with the refund
  • Written statement of specific reasons required for any withholding
  • Bad faith: 2x the amount withheld plus a $500 penalty
