What Minn. Stat. §504B.178 requires
- Return deadline: 5–21 days
- 21 days — Standard (3 weeks after termination + forwarding address)
- 5 days — Tenant leaves due to building condemnation
- Deposit cap: No statewide cap
- Simple interest on the deposit must be paid with the refund
- Written statement of specific reasons required for any withholding
- Bad faith: 2x the amount withheld plus a $500 penalty
