What Me. Rev. Stat. tit. 14, §§6032–6033 requires
- Return deadline: 21–30 days
- 30 days — Written rental agreement (maximum the lease may set)
- 21 days — Tenancy at will
- Deposit cap: 2 months' rent
- Written itemized statement of reasons required with any partial refund
- Wrongful retention: 2x the amount withheld plus costs and attorneys' fees
