What S.D. Codified Laws §§43-32-6.1, 43-32-24 requires

- 14 days — Return deposit or written statement of reasons
- 45 days — Itemized accounting if the tenant requests one
- Deposit cap: 1 month's rent — Higher deposit allowed when special conditions pose a danger to the premises
- Noncompliance forfeits all rights to withhold any portion
- Bad-faith retention: punitive damages up to $200
