What Mont. Code §§70-25-201, 70-25-202 requires
- Return deadline: 10–30 days
- 10 days — No deductions
- 30 days — Deductions for damages, cleaning, or unpaid rent
- Deposit cap: No statewide cap
- Cleaning deductions require prior written notice and 24 hours for the tenant to clean
- Deadline suspended if eviction-related damage claims are pending in court
- Wrongful withholding: up to 2x the amount due plus costs and attorneys' fees
